Can I use diced tomatoes instead of crushed tomatoes?
Just so, can I use diced tomatoes in place of crushed tomatoes?
Crushed Tomatoes: The pieces are smaller than diced tomatoes, but not necessarily smooth and blended in a pureed way. If you use these instead of diced in a recipe that calls for diced, it can make the dish too acidic.
Also, can I use tomato sauce instead of crushed tomatoes? Just using plain tomato sauce or tomato puree would be perfectly fine. For reference, some people will use tomato paste and brown it with the meat for a really rich umami flavor, but they're not doing that here, they're just making MORE tomato sauce by adding extra water so I wouldn't even bother.
Correspondingly, what can I use instead of crushed tomatoes?
Unlike prepared spaghetti sauces, canned tomato sauce should list only tomatoes in the ingredients. Whole, diced, stewed, fresh and crushed tomatoes can all be pureed in a blender or food processor for a smooth, uniform sauce as well. Tomato paste is found in small cans or tubes and can be used as a tomato substitute.
Can I substitute strained tomatoes for crushed tomatoes?
Depending on what you're using it for, you can substitute crushed tomatoes, passing it through the blender if necessary to create a smoother texture. In a pinch, you can substitute 2 tablespoons of tomato paste mixed with enough water to make 1 cup.
