Are cedar planks safe for cooking?

Cedar plank cooking is always done on Western Red Cedar boards. Eastern cedar is not safe to cook on, it can contain toxic resins! The planks used are generally thin, only about a half a centimeter in thickness, and are usually about 12 by 6 inches in size.

Considering this, can you reuse a cedar plank for cooking?

Yes, but we don't recommend it. Technically, if the grilling plank is still in good shape after the initial use it may be reused. Keep in mind that it will take on the flavor of whatever you grilled on it, and some of the essential oils from the wood will be used up from the first round of grilling.

One may also ask, how many times can you cook on a cedar plank? Technically, a grilling plank can be used multiple times but you'll only get the fresh wood flavor on the first use, so we don't recommend it as it defeats the whole purpose of cooking with planks. Also, if you are able to use a grilling plank more than once, you are doing it wrong.

Besides, is Cooking With Cedar toxic?

Some varieties of Cedar are completely food-safe and will give your food a delicious smoky flavor, but others won't impart any flavor (and can even be poisonous).

What does cooking on a cedar plank do?

As the fish cooks and the plank heats up, this moisture rises out of the plank and pulls the characteristic flavors of Cedar with it. This essentially infuses the salmon with a fresh wood flavor and allows the fish to gently steam as the plank acts as a barrier between it and the heat source.
